An eighth-grade honors student confessed to brutally killing his mother while his newborn sister slept in her crib a few steps inside a Florida home, police interrogation tapes released Friday show.
Derek Rosa, 13, also told a Hialeah Police Department detective how he used an “oversized kitchen knife” to fatally stab Irina Garcia, 39, multiple times on Oct. 12, in footage obtained by NBC 6 South Florida.
“You killed him?” the detective asked in the video, dated Oct. 13.
Rosa, who allegedly stabbed her mother 46 times, was seen nodding ‘yes’ before being asked what kind of knife she used to commit the heinous act.
“It’s an oversized kitchen knife,” Rosa explained calmly, using her fingers to gauge the size of the weapon while telling the officer the hand was “purple.”

“Is your mother sleeping?” the detective then asked the teenager.
“Yes, he’s sleeping,” Rosa answered.
The detective jumps forward to ask Rosa what she did after she stabbed Garcia.
The teenager claimed he took one of his stepfather’s two guns from his parents’ closet and “put a magazine in the gun, pulled back the slide,” and “intended to shoot” himself but “couldn’t.”
Rosa’s stepfather, a truck driver, also lived in the apartment but was out of town for work at the time of the murder.

Rosa added that she called an “online friend,” referred to only as “Sweeden,” to say goodbye, still committed to ending her life after stabbing her mother.
He later told detectives he sent his friend two pictures of his mother and a selfie.
Rosa said she again thought about shooting herself but decided to call 911 instead.
He later told detectives his newborn half-sister slept through the murder and he never touched her.

The detective then asks Rosa where she cut off her mother before the audio is muted.
However, the teenager in the video shows her neck as she answers the question.

During the interrogation, the detectives pointed out that Rosa had red stains on her clothes, which the teenager shared was blood because she had not changed, and that her hands also still had stains on them from the murder.

When asked at the end of the video, Rosa asks to use the bathroom and asks for a lawyer when she returns.
Audio from the interrogation video was played at his Dec. 15 pre-trial hearing.
Rosa appeared to make the harrowing confession to detectives in footage played for court that may have been edited from recently released body camera footage.

“I got up, I grabbed one of the kitchen knives and I went to his room,” the recording revealed. After a moment’s hesitation, he responded to a detective who told him it was OK to continue by adding, “I killed him.”
Earlier this month, the Miami-Dade County District Attorney’s Office released disturbing framed images from baby monitors of Rosa standing over her mother before killing her.

The release came as the 13-year-old appeared before a judge on Thursday for another court appearance.
Rosa is currently being held in the juvenile wing at the Metrowest Detention Center.
A tentative hearing date in the case is set for February.
He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
