Florida woman allegedly tried to smother husband after an ex from 60 years ago messaged him

A Florida woman is accused of trying to cover her longtime husband with a pillow after her ex of 60 years texted him, authorities said.

Bertha Yalter, 71, was charged with attempted murder in the alleged attack last Sunday in their Miami-Dade County home, though her attorney told The Post she was “overcharged” and her husband of more than 50 years wants her released from prison.

The argument began after the husband received online messages from an ex-girlfriend in Turkey of 60 years ago, and then responded, the woman’s lawyer, Jeffrey Weiner, said in an interview.

Authorities said the message came in the form of a postcard, according to reports.

Detectives said they found the alleged victim in an “extremely fragile” condition with “several serious bruises and open wounds … as well as bloody open bite marks,” WPLG reported, citing authorities.

Yalter also allegedly tried to drown her with a pillow, the arrest report cited by the station stated.

Some of the alleged confrontations were captured on cellphone video and Yalter allegedly confessed to the attack when he spoke to authorities, Law and Crime reported, citing police.

But Weiner, Yalter’s lawyer, claimed her husband wanted the case dropped and said he was fine. He also denied that he tried to suffocate her with a pillow.

“They were arguing, it got out of hand but there was absolutely no reason for him to be charged with attempted second-degree murder,” Weiner said, calling the situation “unfortunate” and “unpleasant.”

A state attorney argued that the attempt to cover the pillow was attempted murder because “that would have suffocated and killed her,” while he listed other ways he allegedly assaulted her, according to a recording of the hearing broadcast by NBC South Florida this week.

“I think he also admitted to urinating on her,” said the attorney general. “So I think if you look at the whole situation, this seems to be more of a domestic battery by strangulation.”

Yalter is in custody while he awaits a bail hearing later this week.

But if she is released, she must stay away from her husband, according to a court order, Weiner said.

“This thing has been blown so far out of proportion, they’re just fed up about it,” Weiner said of the wife and husband. “Both.”
