Former FBI contractor allegedly coerced minors into sending explicit images, other sexual acts

A retired FBI contractor is accused of forcing nearly a dozen minors to share explicit content and engage in sexual acts via social media, according to federal authorities.

Brett Janes, 26, of Arlington, Virginia, was charged with two counts of child sexual exploitation and production of child sexual abuse material, one count of attempted coercion and seduction, and one count of receiving child pornography after the father of a 13-year-old victim a year to call the police.

Janes contacted the 13-year-old boy, identified as minor victim 1 (MV1) in the federal complaint, through a video game called Valorant and through Discord, an instant messaging platform.

Janes is accused of manipulating MV1 with money and suicide threats.

“[I] thought we were real friends but you didn’t add me and randomly took 100 bucks really showed me man.. [sic],” one message Janes sent to the victim via Discord read. “[I] hope you do well with your dad but if you need s— I’m here but still aware that you’ve taken money while I guess I’m glad it happened sooner than later and I’m just going to kill myself because nobody likes me.”

“[S]sorry to bother you,” added Janes.

MV1 told authorities that he had about 10 inappropriate conversations with Janes through Discord, and that he knew other victims who had connected with the suspect online, according to the complaint.

Janes, who goes by the username “Revision#3409” on Discord, “didn’t just target MV1,” the complaint alleges.

“He contacted nearly a dozen minors on the platform from February 20, 2023 to on or about April 20, 2023. In some of these conversations, he enticed minors to produce and send him child pornography and engage in videos immediately called them to see them naked,” he said. “Three minors have been identified, one child forensic interview is scheduled for May 30, 2023 and another child forensic interview will be scheduled.”

Janes allegedly asked another minor if they were “editing” or online dating, after exchanging explicit images.

In a conversation with the fifth minor, who said he was 14, on Discord, Janes asked if he wanted to meet at his residence near the Pentagon City Metro stop in Arlington, Virginia, and offered the child a beer. When the minor said he was only 14, Janes told him he started drinking at 16, according to messages obtained by law enforcement.

Janes also contacted the victim via Snapchat, according to the complaint.
