Former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Files For Divorce After 7 Years Of Marriage

Politician Antonio Villaraigosa has filed for divorce from his wife, Patricia Govea, after seven years of marriage.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the former mayor of Los Angeles filed for dissolution of marriage in Stanley Mosk Court. In the filing, Villaraigosa asked the court to end his ability to award spousal support to either party.

According to the document, the famous politician cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for parting ways with Govea. Villaraigosa, who served as the 41st mayor of Los Angeles from 2005 to 2013, listed the date of their separation last week, January 10.

The couple was married for about seven years and four and a half months. However, throughout their union, they did not welcome any children together, eliminating any child support or custody issues.

However, in the matter of spousal support, the Democratic Party member requested that neither he nor Govea be eligible to receive alimony. Not sure if they have a prenuptial agreement, but that’s usually the case when neither party is claiming spousal support.

As for the separation of their assets, the 70-year-old politician stated, “The true nature and amount of the Petitioner’s separate estate is unknown at this time. The Petitioner will seek permission to amend this Petition, as necessary, when the matter is ascertained.”

The estranged couple tied the knot in August 2016 in an intimate ceremony held in central Mexico, with around 100 friends and family in attendance. The lavish event took place at a hotel in San Miguel de Allende, with the newlyweds having a “Mexican music parade” through the neighborhood the night before the wedding, according to CBS.

Govea is a force in her own right working in the fashion industry. According to reports, he was born in Mexico and came to the US in 2004.

This is not the first time Villaraigosa has filed for divorce from Govea; he did so in February 2022, listing the date of their separation as June 2018 in the former filing. However, it looks like the couple is giving it another shot.

Villaraigosa was previously married to Corina Raigosa for 20 years before he filed for divorce in 2007 after his affair with Spanish-language television reporter Mirthala Salinas.

Antonio Villaraigosa Hopes To Run For Governor In 2026

In May, Villaraigosa opened up about possibly running for Governor of California in the coming years. The former mayor first announced his candidacy for governor in 2018 but finished third in the primary.

However, Villaraigosa has not given up hope of becoming governor as he told Fox40 that he still wants to “serve.” In his words: “I have spent my life in service and I will continue to serve. We will see in what permutations in 2024 and 2026 and beyond.”

When asked what that means for his political ambitions and if it definitely means he will run, Villaraigosa replied, “It’s not a no, but it’s not a yes either. What it is, it is the truth. I intend to serve this state and our country because I believe in him.”
