As Carter marked his first anniversary in hospice care on Sunday, many people, including Professor Douglas Brinkley, spoke of his resilience when he appeared on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” Professor of History at Rice University said:

“It’s hard when you’re 99, but Carter had a lot of will. He is alert and eats and has the ability to understand what is happening around him. I hope he makes it to October 1, 2024, so we can have Jimmy Carter at 100 years old, and we can celebrate.”

The Presidential historian added that while Carter has “beat cancer before,” his latest focus is on eradicating the guinea worm that “has devastated more than 20 African countries.”

While in hospice care, her husband attended a memorial service held in her honor at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University in northeast Atlanta.

He wrapped himself in a blanket decorated with images of himself and Rosalynn and references to their hometown on the Plains. He also attended her private funeral at their home church, Maranatha Baptist Church, on November 29.
