Former star swimmer Jamie Cail’s cause of death revealed as fentanyl overdose

A former champion swimmer who died in the US Virgin Islands in February reportedly overdosed on fentanyl, police said after a months-long investigation.

Jamie Cail, 42, allegedly died of “fentanyl intoxication by aspiration of gastric contents,” meaning particles from his stomach entered his lungs, the Virgin Islands Police Department said in a press release Saturday, according to NBC.

Police cited an Aug. 22 autopsy report from the Virgin Islands medical examiner.

Cail’s boyfriend found her dead on the floor of their home on February 21 after he returned from a bar around midnight, police said.

They took Cail — who is from New Hampshire — to the Myrah Keating-Smith Community Health Center.

But he died despite the best efforts of doctors.

“She was a very beautiful person,” a friend told WMUR. “He has a big heart. He was really loving and kind and loved and popular on the island and everyone knew him.”

He also won the California high school championships in the 200-meter individual medley and 500 free, the station said. He also swam at the University of Southern California and the University of Maine.
