Four Kentucky teens charged in TikTok ‘challenge’ that involves telling teachers they have a bomb or gun in their backpack

At least four Kentucky teenagers are facing charges of violence and harassment for threatening their teacher with a hidden bomb as part of a crazy trend popular on TikTok.

There have been four separate bomb threats at three different Oldham County high schools since the new school year began on Aug. 9.

At least three of the incidents were confirmed to be caused by social media “challenges”.

“The challenge encouraged students to videotape themselves telling a teacher there was a bomb or a gun in their backpack,” Oldham County police said in a statement.

All three students charged with making terroristic threats are 15-year-old students at Oldham County High School, located just 20 miles northeast of Louisville.

A fourth student, also 15, at nearby South Oldham High School, may also have been inspired by the trend, according to police. They are accused of interfering with communication.

All four students were also suspended from class for an undisclosed period of time and ordered to complete mental health screenings before returning to school, according to a district message shared with parents.

“As previously informed in the letter to families regarding the threat of violence, students who engage in this type of behavior face serious consequences. In addition to school-level discipline, students are charged to the fullest extent of the law for making threats against public schools,” said the memo, obtained by WDRB.com.

The district sent a message to parents asking them to warn their children about the consequences of making such dangerous claims.

Officials are also asking parents to monitor their children’s social media accounts.

“Whether written or verbal, all threats are taken seriously and students need to know the consequences of these actions, both short-term and long-term. Even if it is not a credible threat, it can cause a lot of stress or anxiety for our students, families and staff.”

All TikTok videos have been removed at the district’s request.
