‘Friends’ Creator Reveals Heart-Wrenching First Impulse Upon Hearing Of Matthew Perry’s Death

Days after beloved “Friends” star Matthew Perry was found unresponsive in his jacuzzi, the co-creators of the iconic NBC sitcom reflected on their last conversation with the entertainer.

While the 54-year-old’s official cause of death has not been released, the former showrunner from Williamstown put the suicide claim with their thoughts on his final days.

‘Friends’ Co-Creator Recalls Matthew Perry’s ‘Chipper’ Nature Two Weeks Ahead of His Passage

Marta Kauffman and David Crane, co-creators of the award-winning series “Friends,” recently opened up about Perry’s death. The creative duo looked downcast as they recalled their last conversation with the late actor, saying they had never suspected his death before.

Kauffman revealed he had spoken to the “17 Again” star just two weeks before his death, and there were no signs the 54-year-old was in a bad place. As noted, the cause of the TV personality’s death in her hot tub has yet to be revealed amid ongoing toxicology tests. However, the performer’s death appears to have been an accidental drowning.

Although Kauffman did not share his views on how Perry died, the 67-year-old insisted that his last conversation with Perry proved that he had been happy and lived a good life.

As seen in X’s video of his virtual appearance on the “Today Show” with Crane, the TV producer fights back pain as he recalls his conversation with Perry. When host Hoda Kotb asked how he spoke to “Mr. Sunshine Star” Kauffman left said:

“It’s great. He’s happy and cheerful. He’s like he’s not burdened by anything. He’s in a really good place, which is why this seems so unfair.”

Kotb noted that the 67-year-old’s words were similar to what others have told him about their final moments with Perry. These sources stated that the “Serving Sara” star was “on top of her game” while playing pickleball earlier in the day before her death. The TV host also asked Kauffman to share his feelings after hearing the tragic news.

The “Friends” co-creator revealed that he was shocked by the news. “My first inclination was to text him, honestly. And then a deep sadness,” the TV writer admitted with a shaky voice and then added, “It’s hard to understand. You know, one minute he’s here and happy, and then poof. And do good in the world. Really doing good in the world.”

Bringing Crane into the conversation, Kotb cited Perry’s message about people being “shocked by his passing but not surprised” and asked the “Dream On” executive producer’s input. The 66-year-old said the late actor’s words were not wrong because of his turbulent journey with drug abuse. In his words:

“Given the journey he’s been on, and we’re all aware of that, there’s always a part that’s quite prepared for something like this. It’s still hard to believe because he’s such a living person that it’s hard to believe he’s not here.”

Noting how millions of people around the world are grieving Perry’s loss, Crane said he believes the Golden Globe Award nominee understands the deep impact she had on fans. However, “at the same time, I wonder … to what extent he can live with it and find comfort in it,” the TV writer admitted.

Matthew Perry’s Ex-Fiance Announces His Death In Emotional Post

Before the “Friends” co-creator recalled their last conversation with Perry, TV personality Molly Hurwitz’s ex-fiancée broke her silence following the news of the actor’s passing. In an Instagram update, the literary manager wrote a lengthy message about his time with the deceased.

“He would love the world to talk about how talented he is. And he’s really, really talented,” the media personality began before recalling how the former lover would re-watch his iconic sitcom. Hurwitz revealed the sweet moments happening before the “Friends” reunion show in 2021, writing:

“’F—, I’m so good!!! … See what I did there???’ We rewind and study the scene. Our respect and appreciation for humor is something that connects us. Being with him as he rediscovers his brilliance is magical.”

However, the social media influencer insists that while Perry is a beloved character on TV, the man behind the camera has caused her a lot of pain. “Although I love him more deeply than I can understand, he is complicated, and he causes pain like I have never known,” the literary manager wrote.

Fortunately, Hurwitz has no hard feelings about her ex-fiancé and expressed gratitude for everything that happened in their relationship. “Nobody in my adult life has had a deeper impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I’m so grateful for that, for everything I’ve learned from our relationship,” the entertainer claimed.
