G Flip has opened up about their gender journey.
The musician, who identifies as non-binary, didn’t hold back from speaking candidly about the challenges he faced on his journey to self-discovery in a recent interview. Turns out, they were influenced to accept their true identity after an eye-opening discussion with a close friend.
G Flip Expected To Be Criticized For Their Involvement With Current Partners
Although they have built a thriving music career in Australia, G Flip gained more attention following their romance and subsequent marriage to real estate agent Chrishell Stause. In case you missed it, they were heavily criticized after “coming out” as a non-binary person in a relationship with a woman.
Responding to the “good dose” of backlash they received during a recent conversation with Abbie Chatfield on the latest episode of her podcast, “It’s A Lot,” the Australian star said:
“I knew the backlash would come. Chrishell and I knew that going in. We know we’re going to get a lot of hate, and I know people are going to misgender me and tell me I’m a woman.”
When asked why people stick to referring to them as women, even though they realize they’re non-binary, the recording artist replied, “They just think “You have a pu**y, you’re a woman,” I don’t know.”

Flip is then prompted to self-reflect on their “gender dysphoria” — the term used for someone who believes that their sense of “gender identity” is different from their biological sex when Chatfield asks about it. In their words:
“I think I’ve had gender dysphoria my whole life and don’t understand my gender. When I was a kid, I used to look at myself in the mirror and say “what are you? You’re a boy, but you [a] female. You’re a girl, but you’re there [a] boy[‘s] brain in you because you’re half a slave.”‘
Continuing their self-reflection, the “Bring Me Home” hitmaker stated that it was like “holy sh*t*” when they started “learning and educating and educating myself to be non-binary.”
As the admission makes Chatfield wonder about the beginning of the learning process, he asks if Flip has seen someone in the media or if they know someone who identifies as non-binary.
To that end, the “I Am Not Afraid” singer revealed that although many people influence them in the media, discussions with friends about pronouns have changed their self-perception. Soon after, Flip started using the pronouns they/them in their inner circle.
Once they feel comfortable enough to “tell the world,” they “put something on Instagram.” Finally, the “Drink Too Much” singer believes that “sex and gender are different.” Explaining why they also identify as lesbians, they went on to say:
“My gender is still female and the people I like, their gender is also female.”

Last month, The Blast reported that G Flip had opened up about their similarities to their partners. At that time, they gave an interview, in which they stated:
“We’re actually more alike than you think. I think aesthetically she’s like this beautiful Barbie and, you know, I’m always looking, but, I’m looking.”
Sharing details about the development of their relationship with Stause, they revealed:
“We just got to know each other. We just found out we have a lot in common. He’s just great. He can’t come with me on this trip, but he will come with me for some Aussie shows. And he loves getting front row at the mosh. He’s not standing by, you know?”
G Flip and Stause surprised fans when they announced the news of their romance last year, which was unusual since Stause had previously only dated men. The “Selling Sunset” star was previously married to “This Is Us” actor Justin Hartley and had recently split from Jason Oppenheim before finding love with the non-binary artist.
They surprised the crowd even more when they announced that they had exchanged vows in a “non-traditional” ceremony in Las Vegas in May. When asked if their decision to walk down the aisle was spontaneous or planned during the interview, G Flip replied:
“It wasn’t planned, because we didn’t spend a year getting the list and getting it perfect, it wasn’t traditional and it was fast, and it was the best day of my life.”
