Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie’s parents meet face-to-face for first time since her murder: ‘no remorse’

The angry parents of Gabby Petito went head-to-head with Brian Laundrie’s mother and father in a tense courtroom showdown on Tuesday.

It was the first time they had met since Petito’s murder in 2021 and her boyfriend’s admission that he was responsible.

Lawyers for the parents of the slain 22-year-old blogger have deposed Christopher Laundrie, Brian’s father, as part of their ongoing civil suit against the couple and their lawyer Steven Bertolino.

The father of an accused killer showed “no remorse” on the stand — and hearing his testimony was “heartbreaking”.

“It’s very painful to hear someone who has no remorse and no mercy for the girl they’re going to call their daughter-in-law,” Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, told WFLA after the proceedings in Venice, Florida.

Schmidt watched Laundrie’s deposition live via Zoom, while Gabby’s father, Joe Petito, was in court. Brian’s mother, Roberta Laundrie, was also present.

“It’s hard to be in the room with Joe and Nichole on Zoom asking these questions knowing how hard it is for them to relive it all,” said Pat Reily, an attorney for Petito’s parents.

The lawsuit against the Laundries alleges they were aware of Gabby’s murder but refused to disclose the information while the case continued.

Their willful absence, the case asserted, caused them to suffer severe emotional distress deserving of compensation.

Petito, 22, was traveling cross-country with Laundrie, 23, when she disappeared in August 2021.

Laundrie returned to her Florida home without him on September 1, eventually leading police to name him a suspect in the case that gripped the nation.

Petito’s strangled body was found in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park on September 19.

The Laundromat reported their child missing two days earlier. Brian’s body was not found until nearly a month later at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida.

Authorities determined he committed suicide and found a written confession to his girlfriend’s murder in a letter in his backpack. His parents were never criminally charged in the case.

Petito’s parents are also suing the Moab City Police Department in Utah, alleging they “denied Gabby’s safety and ultimately her life.”

Moab officers pulled the couple over for speeding and found Petito covered in blood and distraught. Police separated them for the night, but made no arrests.

Petito was killed a few days later.

Her parents’ jury trial against Kedai Dobi is scheduled to begin in May 2024.
