Gabby Petito’s parents continue to fight to honor their late daughter.
Former YouTube vlogger “Van Life” was murdered by her fiance, Brian Laundrie, in August 2021. Gabby and Brian were on a cross-country trip to Taman Negara when the unexpected happened.
During their National Park visit, the couple was stopped by police in Moab, Utah after a member of the public reported an incident of domestic violence.

The incident occurred on August 12, 2021, and their interaction with the Moab City Police Department was recorded by a police body camera.
An outside investigation found two responding officers in Moab, UT. made some mistakes.
After her murder, Gabby’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the MCPD in 2022.
One of the family’s attorneys, James W. McConkie, also announced that new information was discovered by Gabby’s family that one of the officers, Eric Pratt, who spoke to their daughter during traffic is accused of having a history of domestic abuse.
“[Pratt] is a domestic abuser, who has used force and threats of physical violence to control and intimidate sexual partners,” according to another Petito family attorney, Brian Stewart.

He believes the officer was “basically biased and probably ignored Gabby.”
Her parents have amended the lawsuit and claim Officer Pratt said Laundrie “looked like a mental and emotional bully,” but treated her like a victim rather than an aggressor.
Now, attorneys representing Utah police named in the lawsuit are striking back at the Petito-Schmidt family.
According to a US Sun interview, attorney Mitchell Stephen called the lawsuit a “publicity stunt” and overreach.
Stephen is a high profile business attorney in Salt Lake City, UT.
He claims police officers “did not cause Brian Laundrie to kill Gabrielle Petito.”

Stephens also added that officers responding to domestic disputes acted “kindly and respectfully.”
