Gabrielle Union is reflecting on her previous marriage to Chris Howard.
The actor and former NFL champion walked down the aisle on May 5, 2001, after meeting in 1999 and starting a relationship. Unfortunately, they ended their marriage four years later, with their divorce finalized in 2006. Although Union previously hinted that their marriage ended due to infidelity, she has come up with few details about her own role in its downfall.

Over the years, fans have grown accustomed to Union’s transparency and honesty about her sometimes controversial past. The most recent example occurred when she sat down with Dax Shepard on the “Armchair Expert” podcast and took a trip down memory lane about her first marriage.
Describing the relationship as “not working since day one,” the “10 Things I Hate About You” actress explained why she felt “entitled” to cheat in the short-lived marriage. As he told Shepard on Monday’s episode, January 2:
“In our first marriage, neither of us felt that marriage should get in the way of our relationship. Part of it was just following her activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one.'”
She detailed that she felt “entitled” to be unfaithful to her husband at the time because “I paid all the bills, I worked**, and I felt like that was it. [with it], looted property. Like my father before me, whoever gets the most can do whatever they want, that’s what I think.”
“You Got Anything Stronger?” the writer remembers going cash in on a therapy session that was given to him by one of his friends. During the session, the therapist reveals her confusion that the former couple’s romance led them down the aisle.
In fact, the therapist has advised them to “find a way to break up amicably” because they have nothing in common except “someone else, so why don’t you go with someone else?”
Union admits that while she sought validation from certain people at that point in her life, she has no regrets about her actions. When Shepard admitted that she felt some remorse about her actions during a previous open relationship that lasted nine years, the “Being Mary Jane” star responded, “I wish I had more guilt for some of those things.”

A year after her split from Howard, Union met former basketball pro Dwyane Wade at a Super Bowl party they were scheduled to co-host. However, it wasn’t love at first sight, as the actress dealt with her marital problems, and Wade was still with his first wife, Siohvaughn Funches. To hear Union tell it, per PEOPLE:
“When I met Dwyane, his resume looked like crap: athlete, going through a divorce, nine years younger than me. No one screamed, ‘Let’s have a lasting relationship.'”
That soon changed when the “Bad Boys” star suffered a heartbreak. The couple began dating in 2009 and went public in 2010 when they posed for paparazzi on the red carpet of the Summer Groove Benefit Dinner in Florida.
Although Union and Wade broke up in 2013 due to their busy work schedules, they soon returned to each other’s arms in the same year. They were so sure of their love that they got engaged in December 2013, with both celebrities sharing the big news on social media with their fans.
By August 2014, the “Think Like A Man” star and her Miami Heat sweetheart were married in an intimate ceremony attended by their friends and family. The couple is determined to have a family relationship, as Union once informed actor Arsenio Hall.
A family affair for them means “no bridesmaids, no groomsmen. Just us and the kids. And we just ride out, just us.” Unfortunately, their marriage did not go well as they struggled with fertility for several years before marrying their daughter, Kaavia James, in November 2018.
The adorable little one, born via surrogate, joins Wade’s three children — Zaya, Zaire, and Xavier. Although the former basketball player welcomed his first two children with his ex-wife, Xavier was the result of a different relationship.
