Gaetz pines for unity between Trump and DeSantis: ‘Hate when mom and dad fight’

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Rep. Firebrand Matt Gaetz made a plea for Republican unity while lamenting the feud between former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during the 2024 cycle.

Speaking to a group of Trump supporters at his campaign headquarters in New Hampshire, Gaetz (R-Fla.) lamented the problems between the two when asked by an attendee whether the party could achieve unity after a rough primary season.

“I think that’s the problem. I’m glad you’re the first. This is an operational question because we cannot win if we are divided,” Gaetz answered during a press open house.

“We already have big media against us, big technology, big government, lots of big donors and big business,” he said. “If we unite, there are many more of us.”

His remarks came before DeSantis quit and endorsed Trump Sunday.

Gaetz quickly endorsed Trump over his home state governor in the 2024 GOP battle for the party.

Trump and DeSantis butted heads on the campaign trail, with the 45th president hurling various negative criticisms at the governor.

Recently, Trump has begun to focus his slings and arrows on the former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley.

DeSantis initially insisted that he would remain in the race through South Carolina’s Feb. 24 primary.

“I remember the good days when I was Ron DeSantis, his transition chairman, and he and President Trump worked well together,” Gaetz added.

Gaetz used the open house to urge Trump supporters to stay focused on New Hampshire.

“They’re going to try to get Democrats out and Bernie Sanders can vote in the New Hampshire primary for Nikki Haley. I’m sure he probably will,” he quipped.

Trump is up in the Granite State with 50.3%, followed by Haley at 34%, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.

The New Hampshire contest will take place next Tuesday.
