Criminal gangs from central and south America are taking advantage of lax US immigration laws to set up in cities across the country and steal from hard-working citizens, a sheriff has warned.
Oakland County, Michigan, Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a crime syndicate from “south of the border” has targeted luxury homes stealing “hundreds of thousands of dollars” worth of property, CBS Detroit reports.
“This is a transnational group involved in this coming from South America, looking to commit burglaries and violate our communities, not only in Oakland County but across America,” Bouchard said.
The sheriff said the thieves have been identified as citizens of Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras.

The gangs have been accused of sneaking across borders and buying fake IDs to stay in cities they then hope to rob.
“These people are after jewelry, purses and luxury watches, currency and safes,” Bouchard said, noting the gang targets homes and scouts them for days to find the right time to strike.
“They usually attack homes from 5 to 9 p.m., they seem to want homes where no one is home, and they usually come in through the back window,” the sheriff added.
Bouchard eventually warned wealthy homeowners to invest in security systems and add cameras to their home entrances to protect their possessions.

Although he declined to comment on which communities have been hit and whether or not any gang members have been arrested, the sheriff said his office has been working with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security on the case.
He claims similar gangs have struck in New York, where officials have also called on the federal government to act at the border following an influx of immigrants settling in the Empire State.
On Sunday, Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul stepped up her attack on US border policy, demanding “limits on who can be bumped” and for more agents to catch those crossing illegally.

“It’s too open right now,” Hochul told CBS’ “Face the Nation” of the country’s southern border with Mexico — where a record 260,000 more migrants crossed last month.
“Congress needs to put more controls on the border,” Hochul said. “Talking about eliminating positions for the Border Patrol, we actually need to double or quadruple that number.”
The governor’s comments came as Ingrid Lewis-Martin, chief adviser to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, called on the federal government to “close the border.”
