Career
Indian Premier League
With the launch of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Telugu mogul Venkattram Reddy decided to build his team Deccan Chargers, and the only person who helped Reddy in the task was Gayatri. He is involved in all major decision making for the team and he is also responsible for selecting the players. In the second year of the IPL, Gayatri’s Deccan Chargers won the league.
Reddy became famous for his frequent presence at the stadium during every match of his team in the IPL, spanning five seasons. She is often caught by the paparazzi motivating her team players and her constant involvement in the game makes Gayatri one of the leading ladies of the IPL.
Journalism
In 2013, like her family, Gayatri was also associated with the family business, where she was known to keep a low profile. Reddy served as feature editor at Deccan Chronicle and at The Asian Age newspaper as well. The journalist revealed in an interview that her writing interests include travel, sports, fashion and cooking. During his tenure at the daily newspaper, Reddy also interviewed several Indian celebrities. Gayatri admittedly never lost her temper and kept her team motivated when the publication faced a financial crisis.
Controversy
- In September 2012, Gayatri’s IPL fame began to wane when his team, the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers franchise, was axed from the IPL after playing for five seasons. The 2009 IPL winners were terminated by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on the grounds of breach of contract as the franchise owner failed to provide a bank guarantee of 100 crore before the deadline. Also, when the BCCI tried to auction the franchise, the Reddys rejected a single bid of Rs. 900 crore from PVP Ventures. The team owners then went to court after BCCI terminated the bid and got 30 days to rectify it but in vain. In July 2020; however, an arbitral tribunal appointed by the Bombay High Court ruled that BCCI had wrongfully terminated the Deccan Chargers, and further ordered BCCI to pay compensation of Rs. 4814.67 crores, in addition to 10% interest from 2012, to Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd.
- On 14 February 2015, Gayatri’s father’s deviant lifestyle landed him and Gayatri’s uncle in CBI custody, in connection with the Canara Bank money laundering case. The two Reddys are accused of using different short-term corporate loans, amounting to Rs. 1230 crores, by submitting false financial statements between 2008 and 2012. Reports state that in the process of confiscating the Reddys’ properties by the Bureau, Gayatri and her mother’s jewelry, luxury wardrobe and apartment were also auctioned.
- In October 2020, when a similar fraud case took place against DHCL, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) revealed that the total amount in the fraud allegedly committed by the two Reddys was estimated at Rs. 8,180 crore. The agency then temporarily attached the immovable assets and confiscated the luxury vehicles of the Reddy family. Reports also hinted that some of the Reddys’ immediate family members might also be involved in the case.
Car Collection
Gayatri’s father often makes headlines for his flamboyant style, and Gayatri is no different. Known for enjoying a lavish lifestyle, the Reddys have a large collection of luxury cars, including 23 Bentley Continental GT Convertibles, four Bentley Flying Spurs, two Lamborghini Gallardos, two Bentley Arnages, a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, a Porsche 911 Carrera S, and more.
