George was the only child of his mother, Catherine Smith, and his father, John William Hill, was an engraver. He attended Board Ripple High School and earned multiple college scholarship offers from major league colleges including Temple and Indiana.

Career
With only one year of college left, Hill declared himself ready for the 2008 NBA draft. Then, after graduating from IUPUI as the sixth all-time leading scorer with 1619 points, he became the second IUPUI player to declare early after Carlos Knox in 1997. On July 14, 2008, he scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in his first summer league game as a Spur.
