Georgia murder fugitive kills self when police on hunt for other escaped inmates show up at door

A Georgia murder suspect on the run killed himself when police knocked on his door Monday — even though they didn’t come for him.

The US Marshals Fugitive Task Force is following up on a tip about someone who may have information about four inmates who escaped from a Georgia prison earlier this month when they were met with bullets flying through the door.

After the SWAT team arrived, a woman led them inside the Macon apartment, where 23-year-old Christian Demond Williams was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said.

Williams – who has been missing since her abduction seven months ago – was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died of her injuries the next morning.

Williams has been missing since March 5, the night before he was due to stand trial for manslaughter in the 2021 shooting death of a man at a Macon convenience store.

A security camera showed Williams, wearing a red hat, being attacked by two other men on his front porch — though neither Davis nor the city’s district attorney believed the suspected killer’s ruse.

“It’s pretty suspicious that someone was kidnapped under surveillance cameras on the day they were supposed to appear in court,” Davis said.

The woman in the apartment allegedly assisted in the escape, according to jail records.

It’s unclear whether he or Williams had anything to do with the real reason the Marshals had appeared at their door: hunting four inmates, including another suspected murderer, who were busted out of the Bibb County Detention Center on Oct. 16.

Joey Fournier, Marc Kerry Anderson, Johnifer Dernard Barnwell and Chavis Demaryo Stokes escaped through a broken dayroom window and through a hole that had been cut in the perimeter fence, officials said.

Surveillance footage shows that the car was at the jail earlier in the night and appears to show someone tampering with the fence.

Bibb County deputies say one person was arrested in a car theft and assisted in the getaway.

Davis said Monday that tracking down the fugitives is his department’s “sole focus.”

“We’ll get you,” Davis said, addressing the man. “We will find you. The footsteps are getting closer.”

A combined reward of $73,000 is being offered for information leading to an inmate.
