Giraffe falls, smashes into family’s windshield at Texas wildlife center in scary scene

A Texas family was left dazed and covered in glass after a giraffe skidded and hit their car, smashing the windshield, during a visit to a Texas wildlife center.

Kari Hill was driving through the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose with her 18- and 15-year-old sons and 1-year-old granddaughter when a giraffe stopped next to her car to say hello Thursday afternoon, she said. WFAA.

The giraffe, looking for a hand-fed snack, poked his head through the sunroof of his Kia Sorrento. He snapped a quick selfie with the long-necked animal before suddenly stumbling into a car.

“Everything was great until he lost his balance and fell into my windshield,” Hill told WFAA.

The encounter with the creature quickly turned terrifying.

“[The windshield] started to give up as he staggered, trying to get his footing back,” Hill said.

“We were covered in glass, and I thought it was going to be really bad, but then the giraffe was able to stand up again and take off.”

The giraffe caused extensive damage to Hill’s car. Bukit Kari took a photo with the giraffe moments before it crashed into his windshield. Curry Hill

Hill also sped up before stopping, where he “made sure the kids got all the glasses off them.”

He called the park’s emergency line, which escorted the family out of the park.

His car had to be towed and he had to file a unique insurance claim, he said.

“[It was] such a quick and freak accident,” said Hill. “[I’m] glad it wasn’t worse. Cars can be replaced. People can’t.”

The giraffe, Rim Wildlife said, was in good condition after the fall.

The park called the incident “unfortunate” unlike anything they’ve witnessed in the 11 years the giraffes have lived at the facility.

They told Hill that they were not responsible for paying damages as a result of the waiver he signed in advance.

He lamented that they didn’t get their money’s worth, with the incident occurring just a quarter of the way through the $89 drive.
