Girija Shankar is an Indian actor and producer. He is best known for playing the role of ‘Dhritrashtra’ in the Indian epic television series “Mahabharat.”

Girija Shankar was born in 1960 (age 59 years; as of 2019) in Patiala, Punjab. Shankar wanted to join the air force since childhood. He had also appeared for the entrance test, however, could not qualify due to his age (underage). He completed his studies from Punjabi University, Patiala and went to Delhi, to enroll himself in the National School of Drama. Girija cleared the audition for admission, but could not join the institute due to some personal reasons. After that, he started studying acting from an acting institute in Patiala. During that period, he met Harpal Tivana, with whom he acted in the theater for about 5 years. After that, he moved to Delhi, and later, Mumbai to train in theatre. In Mumbai, he did theater with many leading faces of the acting world.

Career
Girija Shankar started his acting career in 1988 by playing the role of ‘Dhritrashtra’ in the Indian epic TV series “Mahabharat.” His portrayal of the role in the series earned him immense popularity and landed him roles in many Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil films including “Daata’ (1989), “Maut Ki Sazaa” (1991), Kal Ki Awaaz (1992), Mr Azad (1994), Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai (2002), Khwaab (2004), and Baghi (2006).
Girija has also appeared in several Hollywood films. In 2006, he made his directorial debut with the English film “Banana Brothers.” The film tells the story of two young men who go to San Francisco with the dream of earning big money and living the high life and they finally succeed in it after facing many difficulties and obstacles. He has also appeared in popular TV series such as Buniyaad and Charchit.
