A five-year-old girl died and her 54-year-old grandfather is still missing after they were swept into the Pacific Ocean by giant waves off the coast of California over the weekend.
The Coast Guard responded to a report that two individuals were hit by a shoal wave at Martin’s Beach in California’s Half Moon Bay at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, officials announced Monday.
San Mateo County firefighters were able to locate the girl, who has been identified as Yaretzi Noemi Biorato, of Merced, Calif., and took her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard is looking for her grandfather, Pascal Soriano.
It deployed helicopters and boats to search for Soriano more than 100 miles out in the Pacific Ocean, but after about 22 hours, officials called off the search.
“The decision to suspend the search is one of the most difficult decisions to make, but our crew searched for nearly 24 hours without seeing the missing person,” Jordan Baldueza, deputy commander of US Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, said in a statement. .
“Our condolences go out to the families and friends affected by this tragic event.”

Before Biorato and Soriano’s trip to the beach, the National Weather Service had warned beachgoers to “stay out of the water” because “unexpectedly large waves can sweep ashore without warning, sweeping people off rocks, piers and beaches.”
It puts a “sneaker wave” warning in place, which occurs when a rush of water comes up the coast farther than expected, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Some could surge more than 150 feet over the beach, and firefighters told meteorologists with the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office that Saturday’s high tide topped six feet, Fox Weather reports.

Biorato was remembered over the weekend as a “beautiful soul” who spent “five bright and beautiful years” on Earth.
“We lost a beautiful soul unexpectedly,” Danielle Velazquez wrote in an online fundraiser for the young girl’s family.
“We ask in any way you can help so that we can rest our beautiful baby girl Yaretzi.
“God has called him to enter his kingdom after he shared five beautiful and bright years of his life with us,” Velazquez wrote.
“Please send our condolences and condolences to the family he leaves behind, and if you can contribute to any foreseeable costs, we would greatly appreciate it.”
