A good Samaritan who stopped to help a crash victim along a highway in Arizona was struck and killed by a vehicle, authorities said Sunday.
Two concerned citizens had stopped to render aid shortly before 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of State Route 202 near Phoenix when the fatal crash occurred, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said.
“This is an absolute tragedy,” said DPS Sgt. Eric Andrews told FOX10 Phoenix at the scene. “This is the worst-case scenario where someone completely uninvolved stops to help those they see in need and ends up being a victim themselves.”
Andrews said another vehicle rammed the good Samaritan’s car and pushed it into one of the individuals, who later died at the hospital, KNXV-TV reported.
The driver who initially hit the vehicle that caused the good Samaritan to stop and help had been involved in a previous hit-and-run on I-17 near Durango Road, according to DPS.
Four vehicles were reported to be involved in a collision on the 202.

Two other drivers were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A 5-month-old baby was hospitalized in stable condition following the first collision, according to local reports.
The military said impairment was being examined as a possible factor, although the investigation was ongoing.
The accident temporarily closed the eastbound lanes until late Sunday morning.
