Almost a year ago, in May 2022, actor Ray Liotta died at the age of 67.
The prolific character actor is best known for starring in “Goodfellas” and “Field of Dreams.” Although it was reported that he died in his sleep while filming “Dangerous Waters” in the Dominican Republic, little information was released about his cause of death.
A year later, fans are starting to get answers to his tragic passing.
Ray Liotta’s Cause of Death Revealed

On Monday morning, TMZ revealed that Ray Liotta’s cause of death has been determined by officials in the Dominican Republic. Officials categorized his death as “natural and non-accidental” according to court documents and said he died of “fluid in his lungs” due to respiratory failure and pulmonary edema. They also claimed that the actor suffered from acute heart failure.
Court documents also state that he suffered from atherosclerosis, which is a thickening of the arteries caused by the buildup of plaque along the inner lining of the artery itself. Risk factors include high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and obesity, according to John Hopkins Medicine.
No foul play is suspected in the actor’s death. He had been filming “Dangerous Waters” in the Dominican Republic and reportedly died in his sleep. His fiancee, Jacy Nittolo, was actually with him in the country while he worked on the project. He is survived by a daughter, Karsen Liotta, from a previous marriage to Michelle Grace.

“Alien” actress Sigourney Weaver worked with the late actor in a 2001 American romantic crime comedy film called “Heartbreakers.” According to the film’s synopsis:
“A mother and daughter pull the sweetest trick. Mom marries a rich man, then her daughter puts her in a compromising position, and then mom walks away with a huge divorce settlement. In a twist of fate, the mother falls for their new target, a tycoon, and the daughter for the owner of a $3 million beach bar.”
Shortly after his departure, the “Avatar” actor told PEOPLE that Ray was “a true original,” teasing, “Ray’s love-struck thug, Dean, was the real heartbreaker in ‘Heartbreakers.'”
“Loaded with charm and physical ease, Ray is a natural at comedy and just a doll to work with. We’re having fun,” he continued, noting that Ray isn’t usually known for his sense of humor, but noted that he “brings perfect timing and intelligence to everything he does.”
He added that the “Goodfellas” actor was “a genuine and beautiful man, gone too soon.”
