Google engineer was ‘quiet and staring blankly’ at dinner before allegedly beating wife to death with his fist: report

The Google engineer accused of beating his wife to death with his fists in their California home was “silent and blank” at dinner the night before the murder, according to a friend who dined with the couple.

The unnamed friend joined Liren Chen and his wife, Xuanyi Yu, who also works for the tech company, for dinner at the couple’s US$2 million home in Santa Clara on January 17, according to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail.

The friend told police she was concerned by Chen’s “significant change in demeanor,” according to the document.

When neither Chen nor Yu answered his phone calls the next day, the friend stopped by their home but did not answer the door, the Santa Clara district attorney said.

But she spotted Chen, 27, inside, “kneeling motionless, hands in the air and staring blankly” and called police around 11 a.m. for a welfare check.

When police entered the home, they found Yu’s body with severe head injuries on the floor of the couple’s bedroom behind where Chen was kneeling, officials said.

Chen — whose clothes, legs, arms and hands were “spattered with blood,” according to the DA — said, “I punched my wife” when asked by first responders how he hurt his hands, according to documents cited by the Daily Mail.

The engineer’s arm was covered in scratches and his right arm was “extremely swollen and purple,” the DA previously said.

He was charged with murder and is still in custody.

Chen is a software engineer who works on the YouTube Shorts recommendation algorithm for Google, according to his LinkedIn profile. Yu is also a software engineer for the tech giant and previously worked for Amazon, according to his profile.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by what happened to Xuanyi,” Google spokeswoman Bailey Tomson told The Post in a statement Saturday night.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time, and we will work to provide support to them and to colleagues who are processing this tragic news.”

Both Yu and Chen studied in China at Tsinghua University and at the University of California San Diego, according to their LinkedIn pages.

The couple has lived in their Santa Clara home less than a year after they purchased it for $2.05 million last spring, the outlet reported. Neighbors told the publication that they moved into the house in April and kept it mostly to themselves.
