Grandmother, 53, killed when tire crashes through windshield as she drives to amusement park with family

A Virginia grandmother who was driving to an amusement park with her family was killed Sunday when the tires of another car flew off and smashed into her windshield, authorities said.

Tammy Parsons, 53, was pronounced dead on Interstate 64 following the freak accident as she headed to Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream event with her fiancé, twin daughters and two grandchildren shortly before 12:30 p.m., police and family said.

A tire from a westbound 2017 Jeep Renegade came loose and bounced across the lane before striking Parsons’ 2005 Ford Explorer, Virginia State Police said, according to the Virginia Pilot.

While Parsons, of Williamsburg, died of his injuries at the scene, his partner and loved ones were unharmed, the newspaper reported.

Her grieving fiance told WRIC that when the tire hit the car, one of her daughters jumped on top of her mother to help steer the car into the fence.

“So we’re going to stop and not crash and maybe get killed,” Joseph Palumbo said. “That takes pure strength, in my eyes. And you know what? That comes from their mother.”

Tammy Parsons is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and spouse. “He is the backbone of his family; her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement and greatest joy in life. Tammy would light up any room she walked into and often made people laugh with her sense of humor,” his obit continued.

“Tammy’s many friends and family would describe her as a selfless, kind and courageous woman with the biggest heart who always put others before herself.”

“She’s the best, best woman I’ve ever met in my life,” Palumbo told WTVR.

The couple had been together for 10 years and moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia six months ago, WVEC reported.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, but speed or alcohol were not factors in the fatality, according to reports.
