Grandmother, 64, needs 200 stitches after great white shark attacks her twice in Australia

A grandmother swimming with friends on an Australian beach was attacked by a great white shark – twice – before she managed to fend off the beast and swim to safety.

Pam Cook, 64, suffered multiple bites from the young shark in the Oct. 2 attack at the Beachport Pier and needed 200 stitches to close the wounds.

Cook was in the water with his swimming group when he looked down and saw the wide jaws of a “basketball” around his leg, he told The Advertiser.

“I started shouting “shark, shark!” and then it went away,” he told The Advertiser.

However, the shark wasn’t done with him yet, returning and sinking its sharp teeth into his left thigh.

“I’m still sorting myself out [then] it came from below and attacked my left thigh,” he said.

The grandmother described the shark as “sort of chewing” her leg as “its life flashed before my eyes.”

He used his hand, which was injured, to fend off the beast before and swam 50 feet to the stairs, where he pulled himself up before collapsing.

The cook said he had to get skin folds after getting out of the water.

“I didn’t experience any pain, I didn’t feel it as it happened,” he told the outlet.

A maintenance worker, Greg Rae, put a tourniquet on his leg while others put blankets and towels on him while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

He was rushed to the Mt. Hospital. Gambier, where he underwent 5.5 hours of surgery after sustaining injuries to his thigh, hand and ankle.

He spent a week in hospital and still has “a brace on my arm and a moon boot on my foot,” according to The Advertiser.

Cook’s swim team returned to the water two days after his attack. He hopes to join them again by Christmas, despite being embarrassed after the attack.

“It’s a great group and I can’t imagine not being a part of it so I’ll definitely be back in the water,” he told the outlet.
