A North Carolina family’s Great Dane puppy plunged 50 feet into an old well in the woods Saturday but miraculously emerged unharmed after firefighters rescued it.
The 11-month-old puppy named Mudge was running in the woods near her family’s Wake County home when she fell into a dry well, which was covered with barbed wire and a layer of leaves, owner Janine Haldene told WRAL News.
Mudge and his sister Moonshine often walk along the paths the family created around their property and “they always come back,” Haldene said.
But Haldene’s son, Henry, sensed something was wrong on Saturday evening when Mudge didn’t come home, according to the local station.
As the family searched the property, they could hear Mudge barking from inside the well and immediately called 911.
Mudge fell 50 feet to the bottom of an old well while running through the woods on his family’s property.
Firefighters from three different departments, the Cary, Fairview and Swift Creek fire departments, responded to the scene and used special equipment to lift the dog out of the hole.
A veterinarian is also available to provide any medical treatment needed, according to the Cary Fire Department.
It took crews hours to extricate the 110-pound dog through a harness and rope attached to a metal tripod. A firefighter was lowered into the well to tie Midge to a rope, WRAL reported.
“To have him come out and … lick the face of the guy who pulled him out of the hole, like, wow. It’s really special,” Haldane told the station.
“They did all this for my dog, and he’s part of our family, so God bless them,” he added.
Miraculously, Mudge’s only injury from the 50-foot fall was a scratch on his ankle. Fairview Rural Fire Department
Midge surprisingly didn’t suffer any broken bones from the fall. He emerged with only a small scratch on his ankle, according to the outlet.
Haldane said he couldn’t believe his dog got out unscathed, noting the depth of the well was “quite a drop.”
He said the family made sure the old well was now fully closed and safe.
“Part of me kind of wonders, did he fall to save someone else?” Haldane said.
