Artistic pop singer Grimes has severed ties with her former record label, Columbia Records.
Originally named Claire Elise Boucher, the songwriter, whose work ranges from “lo-fi R&B” to futuristic dance-pop, caught the attention of her supporters after a trusted source revealed that she was parting ways with the record label.
However, it looks like the singer has come up with a plan that will help market her music and generate sales!
Grimes Makes Big Exit From Columbia Records
Spending less than three years at Columbia Records after signing with the label on March 5, 2021, the “Genesis” singer has called it quits.

As reported by Billboard, the singer’s longtime manager, Daouda Leonard, confirmed the news of his separation from the record label. Although his manager did not give a reason for his exit, it is unclear what will happen to his upcoming sixth album, “BOOK 1,” which he made while still under the label.
The pop singer seemed excited about the album while at Columbia and even took to social media to announce that the project is complete and may be released in two parts.
He tweeted about it on the Bird app: “The album is ready. We are mixed. My friend and I finished the last song at the plastic surgery clinic because they wouldn’t let me go, and laughed that it was the most Hollywood moment of all time. I have 20 songs, so maybe BOOK 1 and BOOK 2? Determines the format/playlist.”
Before making his tweet, he offered a glimpse of the long-awaited album during his performance at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival.
Promoting his other side hustles, he introduced his latest venture, ELF.TECH, a web-based application and operating system, as well as, launched Avatar Grimes Gen 1, the first series of his own virtual intelligence avatars.
Before the singer joined Columbia Records, he released five albums on an independent label. His albums include “Geidi Primes” and “Halfaxa,” which arrived in 2010 on Canadian indie Arbutus Records. While his last three albums – “Visions” (2012), “Art Angels” (2015), and “Miss Anthropocene” (2020) – were released on 4AD.
Although the talented songwriter has parted ways with Columbia Records, she has no intention of taking a break from music. As a tech enthusiast, it’s no surprise that he took to Twitter over the weekend to voice his support for AI and confirm his departure from the record label.

Using the official Twitter account, the “Shinigami Eyes” singer posted a screenshot of an article dealing with fake hits by Drake and The Weekend, made using AI Expressing his thoughts on the matter, he wrote,
“I will split 50% of the royalties for any successful AI-produced songs that use my voice. The same deal as I do with any artist I work with. Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal binding.”
He added, “I think it’s good to combine w [SIC] machine, and I love the idea of open sourcing all art and killing copyright.” As expected, curious fans immediately flocked to his tweets to drop their two cents. A fan asked about an upcoming album that he had previously promoted and hyped.
They asked, “What about the album Grimes is working on”? He answered and revealed, “It has been held for so long I am tired of it; I will delete it, but I want to release the new song I just made first.”
Another asked, “Does a song title like that credit you as a featured artist, or how do you prefer it?”
Grimes responded by writing, “Sure – whatever anyone wants. I’m curious about what’s going on and interested in being a guinea pig.” A third commented, “Hacking a new way forward. Go c ??.” The singer, supporting the view, wrote, “Same, my friend – we have to stand in the sea”!
