Guardian Angels tackle ‘migrant shoplifter’ during live TV interview — while cops say it was a pest trying to stop filming

The Guardian Angels tackled a man they claimed was an alien pest during a live TV interview from Times Square about the crisis – but police said he was just a pest trying to disrupt filming.

Group founder Curtis Sliwa was speaking to Fox News late Tuesday about immigrant crime in the city when members of his red-clad cohort suddenly moved out.

“In fact, our people just busted one of the immigrants here on the corner of 42nd and 7th while all this was going on,” Sliwa told host Sean Hannity, pointing off-camera in front of him.

“They’ve taken over!” he said, asking the camera to pan to show the Guardian Angel surrounding a bespectacled man in a dark hooded jacket.

During the struggle, Sliwa’s volunteers beat him to the ground, with one seemingly putting him in a chokehold.

“He had shoplifted,” Sliwa later told Hannity about the fight, without explaining how he or his gang members knew.

“The Guardian Angel saw him, stopped him, he resisted, and let’s just say we gave him some pain compliance.

“His mother in Venezuela felt his vibes,” quipped the former mayoral candidate, again without explaining why he came to such a conclusion.

“He’s smoking concrete, the police are scraping him off the asphalt, he’s on his way to jail, but they’re going to cut him off,” he said, referring to the scandal of immigrants who were released after attacking NYPD cops.

The NYPD, however, has a very different take on the drama.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a “disorderly male,” a police spokeswoman told The Post, without specifying whether it was an immigrant or a robber.

“When officers arrived they observed a man being held up by members of the public,” the spokesman said.

“Officers were informed that the man had repeatedly tried to interrupt and disrupt live television interviews. The man was issued a summons for indecent behavior.”

During his interview, Sliwa denounced Times Square as being overrun by criminal immigrants.

“We have to take 42nd Street back, Sean,” said Sliwa. “These illegals think they own this road, they think they rule the night. This is our country, if they cannot obey the rules, then we will expel them from where they came from.”

Hannity said that he had accompanied the Guardian Angels on patrols in Times Square and suggested that police officers “really appreciate” their efforts.

“Unfortunately, they have been told, ‘hands off,’ but guess what? We are not giving up our hands,” said Sliwa.

“You shoplift, you commit crimes, you attack people, you do not belong to our country and we will make sure you pay the price for that.

“We have to fight for what we know is right and you see little of this,” he added. “They get a little taste of what the Guardian Angels are going to do to free Times Square from them.”

Earlier in an interview on Fox News, Sliwa, who lost the mayoral race to Eric Adams in 2021, identified himself as Adams’ “number one hater” — and attacked his political opponent for “single-handedly destroying this city” by offering immigrants prepaid debit cards to buy food and baby supplies.

“This mayor doesn’t seem to understand,” Sliwa fumed. “He took care of illegal immigrants and abandoned his own people, especially the poor and poor African-Americans who appointed him mayor of New York over me, Curtis Sliwa.”

Sliwa, 69, was arrested in August during an anti-immigration rally outside the mayor’s home, where his Guardian Angel was involved in a fight between protesters and counter-protesters.

In 1992, Sliwa admitted to faking at least six crimes, including his own kidnapping and a botched robbery, to gain publicity for his then vigilante group.
