Gulab Devi is an Indian teacher, politician, and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is known as Member of State Assembly (MLA) in Uttar Pradesh for five times. On 14 March 2023, he made headlines after he got into an argument with a journalist named Sanjay Rana.

Gulab Devi aka Gulabo Devi was born on Wednesday, June 1, 1955 (age 67 years; in 2022) in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Gemini. After completing his schooling at BMG Inter College in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, he enrolled at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where he completed his studies. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Agra University (now Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University) in 1974. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree in arts at SM College in Chandausi. Gulab Devi became a member of the RSS-affiliated student wing Akhil Bhartiya Vishwa Parishad (ABVP) while studying at SM College.

As Gulab Devi came from a family with a poor financial background, she started working as a political science teacher in Bhartiya M Girls Inter College after completing her studies in 1976. She later became the principal of the inter college.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)
While serving as a teacher at Bhartiya M Girls Inter College, Gulab Devi joined the RSS and started working as a pracharak in Uttar Pradesh. He continued to work in the RSS until he joined the BJP in 1991.
Politics
Gulab Devi served as Chandausi councilor from 1989 to 1990. Gulab Devi contested the 1991 Vidhan Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh from the Scheduled Caste-held Chandausi constituency on a ticket from the BJP. He won the election by defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Yad Ram by 6,256 votes. In 1996, he contested the UP Vidhan Sabha elections from the Chandausi constituency. In the election, he defeated Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Karan Singh by 33,259 votes. In 1997, he was appointed as a member of the Budget Committee. From 1997 to 2002, Gulab Devi served as the Minister of Women Welfare, Child Development and Nutrition. He received a ticket from the BJP to contest the UP Vidhan Sabha polls from Chandausi constituency in 2002 and registered a victory over Samajwadi Party candidate Satish Premi by a margin of 700 votes. In the same year, he was appointed as a member of the Joint Committee on Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. He served in the committee till 2003. Gulab Devi lost the 2007 UP Assembly elections against Girish Chandra, the BSP candidate, by 9,743 votes. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as the UP BJP vice-president. He contested the 2012 UP Vidhan Sabha elections from Chandausi constituency; however, Gulab Devi was defeated by Laxmi, the SP candidate, by a margin of 4,007 votes. In 2017, he won the UP Vidhan Sabha election which he contested from Chandausi constituency on BJP ticket against Indian National Congress (INC) candidate named Km Vimlesh Kumari. Gulab registered victory over Vimlesh with a margin of 49,469 votes.
He took charge of the Ministry of State Social Welfare, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in 2017. On a BJP ticket, he contested the UP state assembly election from Chandausi constituency in 2022. In that election, he registered a victory over a Samajwadi candidate named Vimlesh Kumar with margin of 35,367 votes.
When the BJP allotted him a ticket to contest in the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections, around 200 BJP workers and office bearers resigned as they were unhappy with the party’s decision. In an interview, a BJP appointee said that the workers resigned because they wanted their preferred candidate to receive a ticket to contest the election from Chandausi constituency. Speaking about it, he said,
Those who resigned were furious that the party ticket was given to Gulab Devi for the assembly elections. They are demanding tickets for others, and we have also informed this to the party higher-ups. Around 200 adhyaksh stalls, 15 sector in-charges and a large number of party workers have submitted their resignations.”
He was appointed as Minister (Independent Charge) of Secondary Education in 2022.
Controversy
Verbal spat with reporters
In 2023, a journalist and YouTuber named Sanjay Rana was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on charges of creating a ruckus while questioning Gulab Devi at an event organized by the UP government. At the event, Sanjay Rana asked several questions about the promises he had made during his election campaign for the UP state elections 2022, which angered Gulab who responded to the reporter saying that he knew he was there to disrupt the event. He said,
I know your eyes for a long time. Even as you stand there, I recognize your eyes… All these things are right in your own place you say but the time has not yet come. But you forget that this village of Kundanpur and Budh Nagar Khandwa is also mine. All these things I say will work.”
Later, Sanjay was arrested by the police after BJP Yuva Morcha district general secretary Shubham Raghav filed a complaint against him for disrupting the event. Gulab Devi, in her statement, told the media that she did not know about Sanjay’s arrest, but she did know that he had physically assaulted a BJP worker on the occasion. Later, the police released Sanjay after he was granted bail.
