NEW ORLEANS – The South will experience a wet start to 2024 with a wet weather pattern across the Gulf Coast states, bringing heavy rain and potential flash flooding to Texas early in the week and down into Central Florida by midweek.
A march of low pressure systems marching across the US will bring a buffet of active weather from rain to snow across the country.
In the South, a system moving over the Gulf states will bring heavy rain to drought-stricken areas in need of moisture.
However, a lot of rain in a short period of time will be difficult for dry land to absorb and can cause flash floods.
For the first week of the new year, the FOX Forecast Center is targeting rain events to begin in South Texas as a low pressure area begins to form.
Between Monday and Wednesday, heavy rain will dominate this weather forecast from Houston in Texas to Pensacola in Florida.
Cities, including Houston and Galveston in Texas, saw wet days on Tuesday.
Up to 1 inch of rain is forecast for South Texas, with higher amounts of up to 2 inches in isolated areas, including near Corpus Christi.

On Wednesday, the main concern for flooding will be centered in Louisiana.
“The energy from the West Coast, that low, is tracking north into the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s getting a second life, and this warm front is going to drift right along the I-10 corridor, churning that rain from Lake Charles to New Orleans all the way through Birmingham , Alabama,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar.
By Wednesday, the low pressure area will continue its journey to the east and be located off the coast of New Orleans in Louisiana in the early morning hours. With this shift, the threat of flash flooding will extend to a larger area from Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Tampa, Florida.
Heavy rain is forecast in Shreveport, Alexandria and Baton Rouge in Louisiana and Gulf Port, Mississippi, on Wednesday, with forecast totals between 1 and 2 inches.

“It’s going to be really humid on the Gulf Coast, the central Gulf Coast, as we get into the middle part of the week,” Minar said.

The South is under various levels of drought, including exceptional drought in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. These areas need moisture, including New Orleans, where this year’s rainfall totals are 16 inches below normal.
“It will take several storms, not just one, to wipe out the drought that has unfortunately hit this area,” Minar said.
