Guns N’ Roses Drummer Steven Adler’s Chaotic Path To Quitting Heroin: A Kidnapping Story

Steven Adler is well known among hard rock fans, who have been listening to Guns N’ Roses since they released their debut album “Appetite for Destruction” in 1987.

The project reached number one on the Billboard 200 a year after its release, where Steven played a key role as the band’s drummer.

However, with that fame came the intense pleasure of taking heroin, followed by several stints in rehab, which never worked out until Steven’s brother Jamie Adler decided to take matters into his own hands.

Read on to learn more.

In a three-part series of stories by YahooJamie Adler, brother of Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, details how he helped his younger brother recover from addiction.

By 1990, Steven was out of Guns N’ Roses, fired because the band could no longer overcome his addiction. The following years saw the then-struggling drummer drift in and out of rehab.

Meanwhile, Jamie has become a music agent, a career he embarked on to help bring his brother – whom he loves dearly – back into the limelight. However, despite the opportunities he gets in Steven’s way, it all comes to naught as he constantly self-destructs.

A call in March 2007 from their mother Deanna revealing Steven was in terrible shape due to his addiction drove Jamie up the wall. At that time, the doctor said Steven needed to take some medicine to clear his blood, or he would die.

Knowing that his brother cannot be trusted, Jamie plans to kidnap him, breaking several laws.

“I said, ‘F*** it. We’re going to go and kidnap this guy,’” Jamie recalled.

After arranging with some colleagues, Steven was kidnapped from the hospital. This was quickly done by medicating his milkshake with enough Valium and Xanax, which knocked Steven out long enough that they were already at the location where they planned to hold him.

“I’ve committed so many damn crimes at this point,” said Jamie, per Yahoo.

But he was all in, and there was no going back. So every day, for over a month, she made sure her sister got her medicine.

It’s not an easy journey as Steven engages in all forms of resistance, including attempts to sneak crack hidden in a microphone onto the location and, on some days, refusing to take his drugs until he is physically restrained.

In addition to giving him medication, Jamie also brought close friends to talk to Steven, such as the late LA rap legend Nipsey Hussle, in the hope that they would reach out to him.

The Slow Road to Recovery

Attempts to straighten Steven out seemed futile. Immediately after his release, he returned to heroin, making good on his threats against his brother while incarcerated to relapse regardless of how long he was held.

Perhaps, due to the seriousness of the kidnapping – one would never know, Steven contacted Dr. Drew Pinksy a few months later to help him clean up his act.

Pinksy was one of the people who advised Steven when he was kidnapped. Together they slowly began the drummer’s road to recovery, including several relapses and even one arrest.

Over time, Steven is no longer an addict. He formed the band Adler’s Appetite in 2011, was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame, and made a comeback with Guns N’ Roses in 2016.

However, Jamie pays a high price for his actions; their bond of brotherhood was irreparably broken, which he admitted in an interview with her Yahoo: “It was so bad that today, we still don’t have a relationship.”

Although he believed the kidnapping was for a good reason, Jamie was not surprised that his brother was still very angry.

“I held a man hostage and forced him to kick drugs against his will and subjected him to violence for over a month,” Jamie said sadly.

Still, she’s optimistic that her brother will one day let bygones be bygones after they had an emotional moment in May 2017, where Steven seemed to “validate” Jamie’s actions as the right thing to do given the circumstances.

Meanwhile, Jamie, who is married with three children, lives a life for himself, a decision he made after realizing that he had focused on his brother all his life.

“All my life, I’ve never lived for me,” he said. “I always live for my brother. My brother is my drug. It’s time to start living for me.”
