Gursharan Kaur was born on 13 September 1937 (age 81 years) in Jalandhar, British India (now Jalandhar, Punjab, India). She did her primary schooling from Singh Sabha school for girls and her secondary schooling from Guru Nanak Kanya Pathshala, Amritsar. After finishing school, she went to Government College for Women, Patiala for graduation. After that, he enrolled himself in Khalsa College, Amritsar for Bachelor of Teaching (BT).

Gursharan hails from a middle-class trading business Sikh family rooted in Dhakam village in Jhelum district. She is the daughter of Chattar Singh Gujral, former Engineer at Burmah-Shell. His mother is Sardarni Bhagwanti Kaur, a housewife. He has one younger brother and four younger sisters.

She married the 13th Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh on 14 September 1958. They had three daughters, Amrit Singh, Daman Singh, and Upinder Singh.
