Career
Teacher Somasundaram has been interested in acting since his school days. Soon after completing his higher studies in 2002, Guru decided to pursue his career in acting and joined “Koothu-P-Pattarai,” a popular theater troupe in Chennai, to perfect his existing acting skills. He was part of several plays and performed in several theaters with theater groups. Director Thiagarajan Kumararaja saw her during a theater play called Chandrahari, in which she played the role of Chandrahari, and was so impressed with her performance that he offered her to work with him in one of his future films. Later in 2008, Thiagarajan approached Guru and signed him for his neo-noir film “Aaranya Kaandam.” The film is based on one of the chapters from the epic Ramayana which means “Forest Chapter.” Guru plays one of the six protagonists while the others are played by Jackie Shroff, Ravi Krishna, Sampath Raj, Yasmin Ponnappa, and Master Vasanth. Guru played the role of Kaalayan, a drunken man in the film and received great appreciation for his performance. In a media interaction, Guru mentioned that while preparing for his character, he lost seven kilograms of body weight, and also changed his hairstyle, mustache, gait, body language, and mannerisms to justify his character’s personality. At Koothu-P-Pattarai, I used to try different looks and check myself in the mirror. I thought, maybe the structure of my face and body is like that, with less make-up and with small changes, I can show the difference. This helps me in cinema. That all; there is no secret in it.”
In 2013, Guru Somasundaram appeared in the Tamil language drama film “Kadal” opposite Gautham Karthik, Arjun, Aravind Swamy and Lakshmi Manchu in lead roles.
