The Russian-born former American artistic gymnast used safety pins to secure her pants at last week’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit launch. While some fans loved the clever fashion hack, other followers commented on the size.

While not all fans can agree on using safety pins to protect her fans, many loved her outfit, which consisted of a colorful long-sleeved top and baggy blue pants. She accessorized her look with a light blue purse and three coiled gold chain necklaces.
In the caption, she wrote, “Here’s a styling hack to adjust any pants with just ONE safety pin. Recreating the look I wore at @si_swimsuit launch week!” She also included a long string of hashtags including #stylinghacks, #instagramfashion and #safetypinhack.

While some fans were impressed by the hack, not everyone was. “Or you can buy pants that fit? I don’t know if using a safety pin is a ‘styling hack,’” commented one user. “I love your love for gymnastics, but I hate your dysmorphia and body preference. There is more to life than diamonds, makeup, and weight,” wrote another netizen.
“So that’s what you do when a size 8 in toddlers doesn’t fit anymore?” ask another user. “Or you can eat some food,” commented another netizen. “No one in the world has this problem,” wrote another user. “What I’m saying is that I’m sure you can afford a tailor. So why do you use a safety pin?” asked another netizen.

Despite the critical comments, there were some fans who supported the five-time Olympic champion. “Why are all bodies embarrassing?!” asked a fan. “Wow, all these negative comments! Thanks for the tips for us smaller girls,” another follower wrote. “Women come in all shapes and sizes. I hate seeing all the body shaming,” a third fan chimed in.
“People, she’s an Olympic gymnast. He is strong and healthy. If you don’t appreciate that, move on, no need to criticize,” wrote another follower. “Don’t listen to the haters,” shared another fan. “These comments are horrible,” another follower agreed. “He is an athlete. “To the people who are constantly commenting about how Nastia shouldn’t be posting pictures of her body, especially since she’s an influencer: Do you realize that the reason someone becomes an influencer is largely due to the number of followers they have?” ask another user.
“If you feel someone is consistently promoting something you disagree with, you can easily unfollow them, which will not only save you from seeing content that bothers you but will also reduce that person’s status as an influencer,” they continued. “Simple as that – unless, of course, your only reason to keep following someone is to keep leaving negative comments about something that’s clearly a recurring theme in their posts, in which case you might need to check in on your own health – even if not physical, maybe mental.”
