In 1970, Barwood launched his career with the short film The Great Walled City of Xan, which he wrote, produced and directed. He rose to prominence when he and Matthew Robbins were recruited to rewrite the screenplay for The Sugarland Express. It came out in 1974. Although a success at the box office, it was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.

Later that same year, in 1976, he released his comedy sports picture The Bingo Long Travellin All-Stars and Motor Kings, which was nominated for the AFI top ten sports film category.
