Career
In 1970, Barwood launched his career with the short film The Great Walled City of Xan, which he wrote, produced and directed. As an animator, he worked on the first theatrical film and the social science fiction film THX 1138. He rose to prominence when he and Matthew Robbins were recruited to rewrite the screenplay for The Sugarland Express. It came out in 1974. Although a success at the box office, it was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.
Later that same year, in 1976, he released his comedy sports picture The Bingo Long Travellin All-Stars and Motor Kings, which was nominated for the AFI top ten sports film category. After that, he and Robbins collaborated on MacArthur, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Spielberg. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $337 million worldwide.
In the years since, the team has written Corvette Sunner and Dragonslayer. Barwood made his directorial debut in 1985 with The Warning Sign, which received mostly poor reviews.
