Halle Bailey is gearing up for her latest movie, Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” to hit theaters.
The 23-year-old will star as the lead, Princess Ariel, and she just made a red carpet appearance at the live-action film’s world premiere.
Halle Bailey Wants Young Fans To Know ‘They Deserve’

Actress Ariel has a message for all her young fans who never see themselves as their favorite princess.
“I hope they just know that they deserve, and we deserve to be in this space,” Bailey told “Good Morning America” while on the red carpet for the live-action world premiere of “The Little Mermaid.” “And I hope they see themselves and me on the screen.”
“I’m just grateful to be here,” she continued before naming other African-American actresses who have played Disney Princesses. “There were women before me like Brandy and Anika Rose who were the blueprints for me to be here today, so I’m just taking this moment,” Bailey told the ABC show.

Shortly after The Walt Disney Company announced that Halle Bailey would portray Ariel in the live-action film, fans quickly took to social media to slam the company for casting a black actress as the Princess. The hashtag #NotMyAriel started trending.
Bailey spoke about the backlash, admitting that she expected it. “As a black person, you just expect it, and it’s not a surprise anymore,” Bailey said face in a recent interview.” When [Chlöe and I] first signed a contract with Parkwood, [Beyoncé] always said, ‘I never read my comments. Never read the comments.’ Honestly, when the teaser came out, I was at the D23 Expo, and I was so happy. I don’t see anything negative.”
He added, “I know people who are like: ‘This isn’t about race.’ But now that I’m here…People don’t understand that there’s a whole other community when you’re black. It’s so important that we look at ourselves.”
Bailey is not the first black actress to portray a White princess, as Brandy took on the role of Cinderella for the 1997 film musical, “Cinderella.”

Many actors and actresses have come to Bailey’s defense, including Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the original 1989 animated film.
“Her pure spirit, her joy, her love, her unbelievable vulnerability, her authenticity, her bravery, her bravery… it’s just beautiful,” Benson said about Bailey. “It’s just a beautiful retelling of Ariel’s story. I am so proud of him!”
