‘Hamilton’ Star Renée Goldsberry Shares Loving Tribute To Harry Belafonte

Actress Renée Goldsberry has shared a tribute to Harry Belafonte.

Belafonte died on April 25 at the age of 96. The entertainer is known for his breakthrough genre-blending hits “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” A Fool For You,” and “Noah” to name a few.

The entertainment side of his career isn’t the only element of his legacy; Belafonte’s decades-spanning activism also propelled him to prominence as one of the most celebrated public figures of his generation.

The “Girls 5 Eva” star took to her Instagram to share her memories of the singer, with a poignant note honoring her memory.

Activist Cornel West tweeted, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dearest brother- the great Harry Belafonte! His artistic genius, moral courage & loving soul will live on forever! God bless his precious family!”

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi write, “Today, we mourn the loss of Harry Belafonte: a cultural giant who made a mark in music and in the struggle to realize America’s highest ideals. His iconic voice will never cease to bring smiles and light up a room, and his advocacy for human rights will be felt for generations,” Pelosi concluded.

Actress and activist Mia Farrow tweeted, “We have lost Harry Belafonte- a beautiful singer, a brilliant and courageous civil rights activist, a moral and caring man. Miss you already Harry [broken heart emoji],” he concluded.

Goldsberry shared a photo of her meeting the singer and activist.

“Grieving the passing of #HarryBelafonte this morning,” the “Hamilton” actor wrote in his tribute. “I said it out loud – I wish there was a moment when I first met him… I was in a restaurant with my newborn son,” she continued.

“Mr. Belafonte walked in, saw my son, and took it upon himself to bless him. He didn’t know me, my son, or my story. He didn’t know the miracle that ended up giving me this child. But he understood his legacy,” Goldsberry continued. “He walks around the world, in my opinion, careful to pass it on. I imagine he sees all the little black boys as miracles who deserve to be blessed over their heads.”

“Thank you @damian_woetzel for contacting me this morning with this picture,” Goldsberry explained. “I totally forgot he came to see the @Hamiltonmusical when it opened at the public theatre. I am so grateful for his grace and legacy. May we see the world like you, Mr. Belafonte… filled with opportunities to bless each other. Rest in peace,” Goldsberry concluded in his post.

Belafonte’s musical legacy was cemented early in his career. According to the New York Times, the LP containing two of his best-known songs “is said to be the first album by a single artist to sell more than a million copies.”
