The ever-humble Ford took the stage, saying, “I’m happy and honored… but I’ve got a movie you have to see.” He also had some wise words about his career montage, adding, “They say before you die, you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just see my life flash before my eyes.”

Even as the famous archaeologist prepares to hang up his fedora, a surprise visit from his estranged daughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) pulls him back into action. He’s searching for a rare artifact his father gave Indy years before – the Archimedes Dial, which is said to have the power to detect rifts in time.

Of course, Helena steals the dial and runs off with it, intending to sell it to the highest bidder. Indy had to chase after him, but he wasn’t the only one trying to get his dial. His own enemy, Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), is a former Nazi who now works as a physicist in the US space program. Voller has his own plan to dial and plans to try to change world history in the process.

In an April 2023 interview with Total Film Magazine, director James Mangold confirmed that the coming-of-age sequence featuring a younger Harrison Ford would take about 25 minutes. He explained that the goal was for Ford to look as young as he did when he filmed “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the first film in the franchise.

Mangold praised the 80-year-old actor, saying that he was “so talented and agile” during rehearsals, which made it easy for him to “pretend to be 35.” However, he also had to give credit to the new VFX technology in the film that was used specifically to create a young Harrison Ford for the scene.

“We have hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-up, in medium, in wide, in every kind of lighting, night and day,” Mangold explained. “I can shoot Harrison on Monday because, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35-year-old, and I can look at the dailies on Wednesday with his head replaced.”

Additionally, the “What Lies Beneath” actress told Empire that seeing herself age was “a little creepy,” adding, “It’s the first time I’ve seen it where I believe … I don’t think I want to know how it works, but it works. It doesn’t make me want to be young. I’m glad I’ve reached my age.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” hits theaters in June 2023.
