A disturbing video appears to show Russian soldiers killing two Ukrainian soldiers who put their hands above their heads to surrender, which Kyiv called “blinding” evidence of ongoing war crimes.
The footage, which appears to have been shot by a drone near the besieged town of Avdiivka, opens with the first Ukrainian soldier walking out with his arms raised and lying on the ground.
Moments later, his friend stepped out of the foxhole to surrender — and appeared to be shot by the Russians at close range.
The first Ukrainian conscript then raced briefly before collapsing. The area around them was then covered in smoke from the apparent gunfire.
It was not immediately known when the incident was recorded — but the Strategic Committee of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed its authenticity on its Telegram page.

“The Russian Federation…violated the rules and customs of war, the norms of international law,” he wrote.
“The footage published in the media shows the execution of two prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to confirmed information, the Russian occupiers have once again treacherously fired on unarmed soldiers.”
Oleksandr Shtupun, a spokesman for the Ukrainian army’s Tavria group that fought near Avdiivka, told the Kyiv Independent that Russian soldiers who allegedly took part in the executions were later killed in action.
“According to reports on the ground, the enemy group [no longer] exist,” said Shputun.
Shtupun added that the video was a “clear confirmation” of Moscow’s disrespect for the laws of war.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office on Sunday launched a criminal investigation into the military killings.
“The video shows a group in Russian uniforms shooting, at close range, two unarmed soldiers in Ukrainian Armed Forces uniforms who surrendered,” the prosecutor’s office said in a Telegram update.
The killing of prisoners of war violates the Geneva Conventions and is a war crime.
The footage first appeared on Saturday on DeepState, a popular Ukrainian Telegram channel that covers the war. The post claimed the video came from the front line near Avdiivka and involved soldiers serving in Ukraine’s 45th Motorized Rifle Brigade.

The Prosecutor’s Office on Sunday said that the alleged killing took place near the village of Stepove in the Pokrovsk district, which includes Avdiivka and the surrounding area in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region.
“It is clear from the video that Ukrainian soldiers took the necessary steps that show they surrendered,” said Ukraine’s human rights chief, Dmytro Lubinets, who described the incident as “another clear example of Russia’s violation of international humanitarian law.”
This is not the first time Kyiv has accused Moscow of violating international law and the customs of war.
In March, harrowing footage of a man smoking a cigarette and shouting “Glory of Ukraine” before being shot dead in a forested area sparked national protests in Ukraine, as senior officials claimed that the victim, later identified as Oleksandr Matsievskiy, was an unarmed prisoner. war
