Harvard finds more ‘duplicative language’ in president Claudine Gay’s work as Congress investigates plagiarism

Harvard University says it has found additional examples of inadequate citations by school president Claudine Gay – as a congressional committee announced it would investigate mounting plagiarism allegations against her.

The Ivy League school said Wednesday that a recent review found more “examples of duplicate language without proper attribution” in Gray’s 1997 doctoral dissertation, according to the Boston Globe, which obtained a summary of the report.

“President Gay will update his dissertation correcting this example of insufficient citation,” the summary states, with the Harvard Crimson saying it involves three other corrections to those already made to his work.

The review also confirmed that Harvard knew as early as Oct. 24 that The Post “was pursuing a story about alleged plagiarism against President Gay.”

However, the three-person independent panel failed to find plagiarized material because it focused on “all of President Gay’s other published works,” not his dissertation, according to the student paper report.

It was only “in response to new allegations” that the subcommittee “conducted a review of the dissertation,” the university review reportedly said.

The focus on his work comes as there are growing calls for Gay to be fired because of his scathing congressional testimony about the failure to address growing antisemitism on campus.

Before the latest error, the Harvard Corporation — the school’s highest governing body — had confirmed an independent review revealed three cases of “inadequate citations,” but no misconduct.

Still, the school maintained that it was not considered a “violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct” while expressing its firm support for the leader.

The latest confirmation of the error comes as a new report outlines more than 40 claims he plagiarized other people’s work.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which is investigating Harvard, also on Wednesday announced an inquiry into how the school handled allegations of plagiarism.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) sent a letter to the Harvard Corporation demanding the school to submit “[a]ll documents and communications regarding the initial allegations of plagiarism” and its investigation into it, according to the Globe.

Congressional committees are already investigating antisemitism on college campuses.

Gay previously defended his academic work when the allegations began to mount.

“I stand by the integrity of my scholarship,” he told the Boston Globe earlier this month. “Throughout my career, I have strived to ensure that my scholarship adheres to the highest academic standards.”
