Harvard University president Claudine Gay accused of 40 acts of plagiarism in new complaint

Harvard University President Claudine Gay is the subject of a new complaint outlining more than 40 allegations that she plagiarized the work of others.

The 37-page document lists dozens of cases in which Gay, a political scientist, allegedly cited or paraphrased authors without proper attribution in his academic work, contrary to the Ivy League school’s strict rules, according to the document, obtained by the Washington Free Lampu signal.

The outlet reported it independently verified the truth of the allegations along with the identity of the author — a respected professor at another university, who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation.

“[I]It is not impossible that your office has reviewed this entire material, as much … has not been previously reported or submitted,” reads the complaint, which was filed with Harvard on Tuesday.

Harvard University did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on Wednesday.

Allegations of plagiarism against Gay began to emerge earlier this month, with allegations that he retracted the work of another scholar in his 1997 doctoral thesis and that four papers published between 1993 and 2017 lacked proper attribution.

Carol Swain, a former political science professor at Vanderbilt University, said Gay copied sections of her 1993 book, “Black Faces, Black Interests: The Representation of African Americans in Congress,” as well as an article published in 1997 titled, “Women and Blacks in Congress : 1870-1996.”

He added in an essay for the Wall Street Journal: “Ms. Gay has no problem going after people whose work she uses without proper attribution. Many of those whose work she steals are not as angry as I am. They are elites who have benefited from a system that protecting its own system.”

After the allegations, The Post revealed how Harvard shut down a weeks-long investigation into whether Gay had used another researcher’s work without crediting it and hired a bulldog law firm to help shut it down.

In a statement on December 12, the Harvard Corporation – the school’s highest governing body – said officials became aware of the alleged plagiarism in late October and initiated an independent review. They later claimed they had found three instances of “inadequate citations” on Gay’s part, but no wrongdoing.

Gay has the unanimous support of the university’s board of directors, the corporation added.

In a statement to the Boston Globe Gay vigorously defended his academic rigor, saying: “I stand by the integrity of my scholarship. Throughout my career, I have strived to ensure that my scholarship adheres to the highest academic standards.”

Allegations of plagiarism have caught the attention of Congress, with The House Committee on Education and the Workforce expanding an existing investigation into antisemitism on college campuses to include allegations of plagiarism, according to the Harvard Crimson.

Gay has already been criticized for his handling of antisemitic behavior on campus following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack and his response to separate congressional hearings about them in which he refused to condemn Harvard students who called for the genocide of Jews.

“We are committed to freedom of expression – even unpleasant, offensive views [and] hate,” Gay testified. “When the speech conflicts with behavior that violates our policy against bullying and harassment. The speech did not pass that barrier.”

In the ensuing firestorm, a bipartisan group of congressmen introduced a resolution calling for Gay’s resignation, but the college supported it.

Anti-Israel demonstrations at Harvard included a man in a Palestinian keffiyeh who called Jews “Nazis” and “pigs” in the days after the October 7 attacks, and students repeatedly waved banners calling Israel an “apartheid state.”

Harvard is also being investigated over the Department of Education’s handling of antisemitism under Title VI, the law that prohibits discrimination based on race, religion or national origin in institutions that receive federal funding.
