Heart-pounding moment cops rescue tot, mom from SUV hanging ‘precariously’ from wall after crash

New body camera video shows the moment police officers in Colorado rescued a 4-year-old girl and her mother from the family’s SUV that was left hanging “precariously” over a retaining wall after a crash.

The close call was reported Tuesday afternoon behind a business in the city of Boulder, where a woman driving a Lexus SUV with her daughter in the back seat crashed through a wire fence, leaving the front wheel of the vehicle hanging 5 feet.

Boulder Police Raquel Ray and Carlos Castro were the first on the scene and quickly acted to pull the occupants of the SUV to safety, as seen in body camera footage issued by the city police department on X.

In the edited clip, Ray can be heard repeatedly yelling “stop” as he runs towards the stranded vehicle as the driver continues to rev the engine.

After finally getting the woman’s attention, Castro ordered her to turn off the engine, and then cautiously approached the backseat, where his partner caught a glimpse of “little feet,” as he later told Denver news channel 7.

As Castro opened the rear passenger door, he was greeted by a young girl still strapped into her car seat.

“I’ll get you out,” the officer assured the boy.

The 4-year-old asked Castro to get his mother out, and he promised “to help her too.”

Ray grabbed Castro’s belt as he reached the youngster and helped him out of the SUV, before the female officer scooped him up in her arms and led him away to safety.

“Do you want to talk to the fire department?” Ray asked the girl. “They are heroes.”

Boulder Fire-Rescue crews who then responded to the scene were able to stabilize the front of the Lexus, allowing the driver to climb out the rear passenger door.

Both mother and daughter escaped without injury.

“Incidents like this involve many moving parts (sometimes literally) and vehicle extrication is a skill that BFR firefighters routinely practice and use,” Boulder Fire-Rescue wrote on X.

Castro then explained that he had to control his emotions to perform the rescue.

“If I had acted like a father or something like that, I would probably have put myself in danger of approaching the vehicle when it was not safe to do so,” he said.

The mother, who has not been publicly identified, is charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and child abuse — although officials are now investigating the possibility that the driver was suffering from medical conditions at the time of the crash.
