Helicopter with 6 on board crashes near California-Nevada border days after 5 Marines die in chopper crash

A helicopter carrying six people crashed near the California-Nevada border late Friday night — just days after five Marines were killed when their helicopter crashed in the Golden State.

The Eurocopter EC 130 crashed near Nipton, outside the Mojave Desert Reservation, east of the 15 Freeway, around 10 p.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said. It was reported that there was rainy weather at that time.

Bloomberg reports that the helicopter was carrying the co-founder of Access Bank, Nigeria’s largest bank, Herbert Wigwe, along with Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former president of the Nigerian stock exchange.

No survivors were found, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. The sheriff’s office said the flight was headed for Boulder City, Nevada, about 25 miles outside of Las Vegas, Fox News Digital reported.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. NTSB investigators are expected to arrive at the scene on Sunday. “They will document the scene and examine the aircraft,” an NTSB spokesperson told Fox News. “The aircraft will then be taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.”

The helicopter is registered to a Burbank-area tourism company called Orbic Air, NBC reported.

Orbic Air could not immediately be reached for comment.

Friday night’s incident marked the second fatal helicopter crash in California in less than a week, after five Marines were killed when their plane crashed while returning from training on Tuesday.
