Hemant Soren is an Indian politician from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and he is the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is the son of veteran politician Shibu Soren.

Hemant Soren was born on Sunday, 10 August 1975 (age 48 years; in 2023) in Nemra, Ramgarh District, Bihar (now Jharkhand). His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his schooling from Patna High School in Patna, Bihar. After passing 12th standard, he pursued Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra in Ranchi, Jharkhand. However, he did not complete his college education.

His father, Shibu Soren is a renowned politician who has served as a Union Cabinet Minister and also as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times. His mother, Roopi Soren is a farmer. He has 2 brothers, Durga Soren (eldest; deceased) and Basant Soren (younger; businessman). His younger sister, Anjali Soren is a politician.

Career
Soren entered politics when he contested the 2005 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, but he lost. On 24 June 2009, he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. On 4 January 2010, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha when he was elected as MLA from Dumka seat in Jharkhand. In 2009, he was appointed as JMM’s working president. On 11 September 2010, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand with Arjun Munda as the CM. On 13 July 2013, he was appointed as the fifth and youngest Chief Minister of Jharkhand at the age of 38.

In the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the BJP won a majority in Jharkhand, and Soren was forced to resign as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Soren contested and won from the Barhait constituency in the Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2014. On 8 January 2015, he was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly. In January 2019, before the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, Soren met with leaders of the Congress, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and formed Jharkhand’s first Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance). Soren spearheaded an alliance to contest the Jharkhand Assembly Elections against the BJP.

During the Jharkhand Assembly Election campaign, Soren was also projected as the Mahagathbandhan Chief Ministerial candidate. In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, Soren contested from Barhait and Dumka assembly seats and won from both seats. He was appointed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the second time. On 29 December 2019, he was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Controversy
- In 2017, the then Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das had invited Soren to the “Global Investors Summit (GIS) Jharkhand.” However, Soren declined the invitation, and he said-
The summit is the Maha Chintan Shivir of the land grabbers and it is being organized to loot the land of Adivasis, Moolvasis and farmers in the state.”
- On 25 August 2022, in a recommendation to the Governor of Jharkhand, the Election Commission (SPR) suggested that the governor disqualify Hemant Soren as an MLA under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. This recommendation was based on the stone mining allocation case where Soren was found guilty of abusing his position to allocate a stone mining lease to himself.
- He was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on November 2, 2022 to be questioned by the agency regarding the case of illegal mining in the state.

- Ultimately, Soren refused to enter mainstream politics. However, in 2009, his brother Durga Soren died of a brain haemorrhage. The sudden departure of his younger brother caused Hemant to be pushed into the leadership of JMM. Earlier, Durga Soren was said to be the political heir of Shibu Soren.
