Halee Rathgeber, a 20-year-old nursing student at the University of Southern Indiana, was killed. His body was found with a gunshot wound to the head at a football facility in Warrick County, about 15 miles from his employer. Authorities also discovered that her belongings, including her wallet, phone and keys, were missing from the scene.
Due to a lack of forensic and physical evidence, authorities began questioning Halee’s friends and family after learning that she was with Isaiah Hagan the night of her death. Hagan said he left it at the football facility, but phone records and blood evidence found at his home suggest otherwise. On Outskirts of Town, an episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered on Oxygen will explore the 2017 shooting death of Halee Rathgeber on Wednesday. The program will run on the channel on February 8, 2023, at 11 pm ET.
The synopsis of the episode reads:
“Halee Rathgeber loves taking care of others and aspires to be a nurse, but it defies logic that someone wants her dead; the murder scene tells the police nothing, but the shocking moment in court says a lot.”
Isaiah Hagan’s conviction, Halee Rathgeber’s intentions the night she died, and more information about the case
1) A gunshot wound to the head has been determined as the cause of death for Halee Rathgeber.
Halee Rathgeber, a 20-year-old nursing student at the University of Southern Indiana, was found shot to death in the parking lot of the Alcoa Soccer Complex in Warrick County on April 24, 2017. A mother and her daughter driving by the parking lot found her dead on gravel . A blue towel was found next to his body, and he appeared to have been shot in the back of the head. Furthermore, none of his belongings were found at the scene of the murder, including his pocket book, phone and keys. His cause of death was determined by two autopsies to be a single gunshot to the head.
2) The event takes place after Halee’s transition at Texas Roadhouse.
Halee was shot to death during her shift at the Texas Roadhouse in Evansville, which is about 15 miles from the scene of the murder, according to sources. He is asked to go out drinking with friends that night, but he declines, preferring to study in the library with his friend Ansley. But his intentions changed when he went to meet another friend called Jordan at 10pm to collect his wallet. Jordan has been dating Thaddeus Rice, who is hated by his peers.
3) Thaddeus Rice was the initial suspect in Halee Rathgeber’s murder.
Because the police lacked evidence in the initial phase of the investigation, they questioned people close to the victim. This is when Thaddeus Rice’s name came up as a possible suspect. Authorities discovered that Halee had previously been questioned in connection with a separate murder case involving the suspect and his alleged friend Rice. Thaddeus Rice was later identified as the prime suspect in the crime because the police felt that if Halee had revealed information about Rice at that time, she would have had the perfect excuse to kill him. When another suspect is identified throughout the investigation, he is quickly ruled out as the killer.

4) Halee Rathgeber’s friend Isaiah Hagan was placed at the scene of the murder.
The investigation then turned to Isaiah Hagan, a friend of Halee Rathgeber who had a history of stealing or borrowing money. According to the account, he also took money from the victim, which officials say sparked an argument between them. Authorities discovered Hagan had met the victim the night before the murder. He reportedly said that he dropped Halee off at the soccer facility, where she was supposed to meet someone else. Hagan later stated that he tried to call Halee at about midnight but she did not answer.
A week after her murder, the FBI, which had been recruited to help, was able to obtain Halee Rathgeber’s mobile data. The data revealed that their movements on the night of the crime were similar. At around 11pm, their phones were spotted going to the football field, after which Halee’s phone was switched off. However, it was reassembled at around 3.20am before closing.
5) Hagan’s mother testified at the second trial, which certainly contributed to his conviction.
Isaiah Hagan’s first trial ended in a mistrial. During the second trial, her mother spoke in court, claiming that she confessed to her about accidentally shooting Halee Rathgeber. He also told the court that Hagan threw the murder weapon in the trash. He was convicted of three offences, including murder, obstruction of justice, and robbery resulting in grievous bodily harm, based on his mother’s testimony and other important circumstantial evidence. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 2018.
