Will Smith has shared some insight into the period he went through while filming the movie, “Emancipation.”
The acclaimed and multi-award-winning actor admitted that he felt he had pushed boundaries as an actor, especially when he had to take on the role of an escaped slave in the 2022 drama.
Antoine Fuqua’s film, which came after Smith’s famous incident at the Oscars, was inspired by historical events, particularly the story of Peter, a former slave whose scarred back was photographed in 1863.
Will Smith ‘Goes Too Far’ In Portraying Enslaved People In ‘Emancipation’
Although he always gives his all to whatever character he takes on, Smith seems to take a better decision when he takes on the role of an escaped slave in “Emancipation.” He spoke about his experience during an appearance on a recent episode of comedian and actor Kevin Hart’s talk show “Hart to Heart,” where he began:
“I went too far in ‘Emancipation.’ Just bringing it up, I started to tear up. I wanted to feel the degradation of slavery, and I went too far. The level of human cruelty…what people will do to each other. You know, I have a chain around my neck, and we are working. I want their actual weight. I want a real necklace. They put it around my neck, and they adjusted it to size, and the prop master went to insert the key, and it didn’t work.”

He recalled “standing there” as his counterpart ran around, unsuccessfully looking for a way to get off his chain. “I was standing there in that chain, right on that anxious edge,” the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor elaborated before adding that facing “that level of brutality” left a deep impression on him, turning him toward God.
“I will not return it. It was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had as an actor. Peter introduced me to God. My faith was strengthened after working on the film,” Smith admitted conclusively to Hart.
Despite the shocking revelation of the “Bad Boys” cast, it’s not the only time “Emancipation” integrates real-life action. The Blast noted that in December 2022, the 54-year-old revealed that an unnamed actor, who was also too deep in character, spat in his face during filming. He stated during an episode of “Red Table Talk”:
“One day on set, there was a scene with one of the actors, and he leaned in my face and said, ‘You’re a cold person, aren’t you?’ and then he ad-libbed,” recalls the actor.
As she recounted the incident, Smith pointed to spitting on her daughter, Willow, prompting her other children, including Trey and Jaden, to burst out laughing. She then continued, “I was like, ‘Makeup!’ No, but it’s like . . . I’m like, whoa, every actor on this set takes it very, very seriously.
The Hollywood Project Has Received Zero Nominations From Top Awards Outfits
Despite the actor’s dedication to portraying realistic characters in Apple’s drama, it was not denied especially by the famous award academy.
As The Blast reported in December 2022, Smith does not expect the project to be overlooked at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards because he assumes that enough time has passed since he slapped Chris Rock on the Oscar stage last year. In fact, as an insider says:
“Will knows it’s a long road to redemption, and a lot of people will never forgive him. But this really brings it home.”
The lack of nominations and equally low ratings allegedly affected the “Aladdin” actor so badly that he regretted not delaying the release of “Emancipation.” To add salt to injury, her best friend, Tom Cruise, has reportedly been ignoring her.
According to the same source, Smith has approached the “Mission Impossible” cast several times in an attempt “to reconnect and see if they can brainstorm some projects together.”
“A solid movie with Tom will guarantee Will’s comeback, or so he thinks. Will had also offered to fly to London if that was easier, but Tom didn’t bite and didn’t write back,” they explained again.
The insider also claimed that Cruise wouldn’t be “stupid enough to put his neck on the line and be dragged down by association,” especially for someone like Smith, who is “still kryptonite.”
