A heroic mother and her 1-year-old son died in a raging house fire in Houston Saturday after she pulled her two older children from the flames.
Giovanna Cabrera, 31, quickly carried her 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter away from the fire and raced back to save her 1-year-old son, the Houston Fire Department said.
But firefighters found the mother and baby dead inside.

“She hugged him like a baby so it’s like I know she’s trying. I know if she can…she’ll make it,” her sister Giselle Bueno told KTRK.
“It’s still real. Like, I think he’s somewhere else,” the grieving sister told KPRC. “Like I want to see him later. This, felt like a house on fire. No, no, nothing happened to my sister or the baby.”

The surrounding community has rallied to help his two surviving children. An online fundraiser has raised more than $24,000 that will provide clothing and other necessities for the children, as well as cover funeral costs.

“It’s great to see how important he is and how everyone sees him as he is, because he’s a hero,” Bueno told KTRK.
While it’s unclear what sparked the deadly fire, Houston firefighters will be walking around neighborhoods Tuesday to deliver safety tips and talk to residents about operating smoke detectors, home escape plans and fire prevention.
