A Georgia high school baseball player was seriously injured and left in a coma after a freak accident occurred in the team’s batting cage.
Gainesville High School senior Jeremy Medina, a pitcher and catcher for the school’s baseball team, was accidentally hit in the head with a bat in the team’s batting cage early Monday afternoon, according to school officials.
School officials said Medina has since been in stable condition although he remains in a coma at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
“The entire Gainesville community is devastated by the news,” the school said in a heartfelt statement on Facebook.
“His family are firm believers in Jesus Christ and His redemptive love, and are asking for prayers during this very difficult time,” the release continued.
Details about how Medina was hit in the head by the bat have not been shared by the baseball team or the school district.

The community of Gainsville, located about 54 miles from Atlanta, as well as other high school teams in the area joined in their support for Medina following the tragic incident.
“The baseball community is tight and We send all our love and prayers to the Gainesville Baseball players, coaches and family,” Chestatee High School wrote on their Facebook.
Medina alternated between pitcher and catcher for Gainesville High School in the 2022 season, although it is unknown if the senior has any college offers.
The bad news comes just weeks after a high school athlete was also in a coma for nearly three weeks before dying.
Cain Lee, 14, an eighth-grader at Lutheran Academy South, died after suffering a brain injury during a football game.
Lee was given about half an hour to live after suffering the injury during a Southwest Football League game, according to a Facebook post released by Lee’s relatives.
The 14-year-old multi-athlete, who competes in baseball, basketball and track, is described as “a selfless kid who cares more about other people and how they’re doing than how he’s doing,” his baseball coach said. Darrin Forse.
“This great loss is heartbreaking; however, we know he is in heaven and we are blessed by the time he spent with us” said Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. “I want to say a sincere thank you for all the kind prayers.”
