High school goes into lockdown after students erupt in wild lunchtime brawl

A lunchtime brawl at a Queensland, Australia high school forced students and teachers into lockdown on Tuesday.

Shocking footage has been shared online, showing a number of teenagers fighting, throwing punches and punching each other at North Bundaberg State High School while a teacher tried to intervene.

The fight allegedly started with just two students but quickly escalated, with several groups joining forces to brawl across the school playground.

Examples of disciplinary issues have previously plagued the school, with staff reportedly instructed to call the police if they spot a group of “eshays” [Australian slang for a violent youth subculture] students in the school grounds.

A Queensland Department of Education spokeswoman confirmed both police and ambulance services had to be called to the school.

A concerned parent told NewsMail that parents were not informed of the incident, which they described as a “riot”, until some time after it occurred.

The school’s principal, Robyn Kent, sent a letter to parents, informing them that a precautionary closure had been implemented due to a “student behavior incident.”
