Hikaru Nakamura was born on December 9, 1968, in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, to a Japanese father, Shuichi Nakamura, and an American mother, Carolyn Merrow Nakamura. His mother was a classically trained musician, and his father was a former public school teacher.
His family moved to the United States when he was two years old. Unfortunately, his parents divorced when he was just three years old in 1990.

Nakamura’s career has grown steadily since his debut in 2004 when he finished fourth in group “B” at the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He also qualified for the 2004 FIDE World Chess Championship. On June 20, 2005, he was named the 19th Frank Stamford Chess Fellow and received a $32,000 grant to further his education and chess competitions.
He won the US Chess Championship in 2005, scoring seven points in nine rounds to tie grandmaster Alex Stripunsky for first place. He has many achievements, and I will list some of them below:
He won the US Chess Championship in May 2009. In July, he won the Donostia-San Sebastian Chess Festival, and in August, he was crowned World Chess Champion 960 in Germany. The following year, he began representing the United States at the World Team Chess Championship in Bursa, Turkey, where he won the gold medal and finished in the top ten.
He also started training with former world champion Garry Kasparov in 2011, in Group A Victory of Tala Steel. Their first rehearsals were held in New York starting in January, but the rehearsals ended in December 2011.
In 2012, he won his third US Championship, as well as many other victories; he competed in the Reggio Emilia Championship, finishing second; he won the US Championship in May; he also competed in the Tal Memorial in Moscow, and he took third place in the Biel Chess Festival. In August of the same year, he led the United States team to fifth place at the Chess Olympiad.
